The 76-acre Steinberg Vineyard has been in the sole possession of the estate since the year 1239, and its founding by the Cistercian  monks of the Eberbach Monastery dates back to the year 1170. In the 18th century the monks constructed a wall around their favourite vineyard in order to protect it from grape thieves and wild animals – a wall that reaches up to four metres high and is almost two miles long.
